We are proud to announce that Cathy McKenna, Head of Campus at Mount Isa, has been named one of The Educator’s Top Teachers and Educators in Australia Under 35 as part of the 2026 Rising Stars and School Leadership Awards.
This prestigious recognition highlights outstanding educators across the Australian K–12 sector who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, innovation and impact early in their careers.
Cathy’s inclusion reflects her unwavering commitment to student success and her leadership within QPSC’s multi-campus college model. As Head of Campus in Mount Isa, she plays a pivotal role in delivering high-quality education while driving improved student outcomes through personalised, trauma-informed learning approaches tailored to each individual student.
At the heart of Cathy’s work is a deep belief in the potential of every young person.
“What drives me as an educator is the students themselves,” she said.
"I am motivated by the opportunity to support them on their toughest days, to be someone who believes in them and helps them see their own potential.”
Cathy’s career has been shaped by her experience supporting vulnerable students, an area that continues to fuel her passion for education. She is dedicated to creating safe, inclusive environments where every student feels valued, understood and supported.
Her impact is especially meaningful given her unique perspective of seeing students across different stages of their learning journey.
“I feel incredibly privileged to have worked with students in primary school and then see many of them return through our senior program at QPSC,” she said.
“Being part of their journey from when they are younger through to the final stage of their schooling is very meaningful to me.”
As an educator and leader, Cathy is focused on ensuring students leave school equipped not only with academic knowledge, but with confidence, practical skills and belief in themselves.
“At this stage, I see my role as helping ensure they leave education with confidence, practical skills and belief in themselves so they can step into a bright future.”
Cathy’s leadership philosophy extends beyond students. She is equally passionate about supporting her colleagues and fostering a strong, collaborative school culture.
She believes that empowering staff, building trust and nurturing professional growth are essential to achieving the best outcomes for students.
By combining compassionate leadership with a commitment to innovation and inclusion, Cathy continues to make a significant impact within her campus and the broader school community.
Her recognition as one of Australia’s top educators under 35 is a testament to her dedication, leadership and the difference she makes in the lives of young people every day.
